Cricket, Croquet, & Tennis Club

At the Ellesmere Sports Club we host several sports including: bowls, cricket, croquet & tennis.

Tennis

Ellesmere Sports Club has 4 Shale Courts. Our shale courts are a bit special. A similar surface to that played on at the French Open, shale courts are now increasingly hard to find and consequently highly prized. Shale is a great surface for beginners and children, as the ball bounces less fast than on tarmac, and older players find it is kinder to their joints.

League Tennis

Monday nights:

3 men's teams each made up of 6 men playing in the Bolton League

Tuesday nights:

2 mixed teams made up of 4 men and 4 women also playing in the Bolton League

Wednesday nights:

2 mixed teams of 4 men and 4 women playing in the Walkden League

Junior Members

We do have a small group of junior members, but at present they don't play in a league. This year we are focusing on developing the junior section with group coaching and beginners coaching

Everyone is welcome, whether you want to play for pleasure or competitively!

Bowls

All are welcome to enjoy bowling at the Ellesmere. We have a membership of experienced bowlers and those new to the game. Have you played in the past and are want to take the game up again? Or just want to have a go and see if it's the game for you?

Ellesmere Bowling club play on a superb floodlit green situated within the picturesque surroundings of Ellesmere Sport Club in Worsley. The Sports Clubhouse overlooks the green, providing a beautiful backdrop for games and competitions. The green has often been used for the finals of local and county competitions.

We have 3 mixed teams playing in 2 leagues:

A Team & B Team competing in the Eccles and District League in divisions 1 and 2. This league play on Monday and Friday evenings between April - August commencing at 19:00.

The other team competes in the Farnworth League. Their games are played on Thursday evenings commencing at 19:00.

We train every Tuesday evenings at 19:00 between April - September. This provides members who don't want to play competitively a chance to practice and enjoy the game while socializing with other members of the club.

We welcome men, women, boys and girls of any age who wish to give crown green bowls a go socially or competitively!

If you are interested in joining Ellesmere Bowling Club or fancy an informal trail session, email Steve ellesmerebowls@gmail.com or message on Martin 07828 297457.

Ellesmere Bowling Green is also available for hire and we welcome any other teams to visit us for social bowling.

Cricket

Worsley Cricket Club was founded in 1846 by the 1st Earl Ellesmere as one of the ways of improving the lot of his estate workers and those involved in building St Mark’s Church. Apart from during WW1, cricket has been played on the ground continuously in both a friendly and competitive capacity. The club has had two other grounds but has been on its current delightful plot just through the trees off Walkden Road since the late 1800s.

We are proud to be founder members of the Greater Manchester Cricket League.

We have been awarded ECB Clubmark status. Our 1st and 2nd X1s play league matches on Saturdays and cup matches on Sundays. We also have a X1 that plays on Sundays. Our junior teams play midweek in the evenings.

On the look out for a new club? We are always happy to welcome new players. Feel free to come down to a practice session (Tuesday evenings for seniors, Friday evening for juniors).

The cricket section also has a separate website where you can find further details at: https://worsley.play-cricket.com/

Membership is open to everyone whether you are interested in playing competitively or not, everyone is welcome at our family based club!

For more information send us an email: worsleycc@gmail.com

Known by many, including ex Lancashire & England cricketer AC McLaren as "The Prettiest Ground"
